The Development of the Personality

"What Jung is really driving at is that individuation requires that we are conscious in broader contexts about the choices that we make. In making these choices we are inclined to privilege our inner preferences, even if they  ̄y in the face of what society regards as `normal' or acceptable behaviour. In so doing we opt for authenticity over social or cultural expectation and personal need over social conventions. The downside to this is that the comfort of the collective, the easy life of fitting in and going with the  ̄ow, is abandoned in favour of the personal struggle to be fully ourselves. For Jung, this call to individuation is a vocation. Indeed, Jung thought that when the individuation process was made conscious it took the form of quests, heroic tasks, labyrinths and other maze-like forms. He comments:

The words, `many are called, but few are chosen' are singularly appropriate here, for the development of personality from the germ-state to full consciousness is at once a charisma and a curse, because its ffirst fruit is the conscious and unavoidable segregation of the single individual from the undifferentiated and unconscious herd. This means isolation, and there is no more comforting word for it. Neither family nor society nor position can save him from this fate, nor yet the most successful adaptation to his environment, however smoothly he fits in. The development of the personality is a favour that must be paid for dearly."

The Source of Intuition

"If the unconscious doesn’t operate on logical reasoning, what does it ride on? After much effort to demystify intuition, psychologists largely agree that the unconscious relies on the activation of associative links among concepts stored in our memory to produce intuition.

Concepts are associated in our memory with varying strength. Things that tend to co-occur or share similar features are strongly associated with each other. For example, pillow is strongly associated with sleep because these concepts tend to co-occur on a daily basis, as opposed to with fight, which leads to a weak or remote association. Flashes of creative intuition occur when people make remote or unusual associations between concepts."

Trechos do Desassossego (12)

Busco-me e não me encontro.

Freedom vs. Censorship

"We are willing enough to praise freedom when she is safely tucked away in the past and cannot be a nuisance. In the present, amidst dangers whose outcome we cannot foresee, we get nervous about her, and admit censorship."

The Unsayable

–– You better keep this one to yourself. It’s too risky to post this fic the way it is.

–– Would you not post it, after all the work, and after announcing it to the world?

–– If you really want to post it, you’ll have to rewrite it: you’ll have to water it down a bit, make the language more accessible, add more steam to it, even! Do you know that most dreamers don’t even watch the 3rd season?!

–– I know that.

–– And you still want to post this fic the way it is?!

–– You’re suggesting self-censorship?

–– If you want to put it that way… If the story was otherwise perfect, you’d still have the language issue… nobody wants to read complex language anymore!

–– That’s a harsh generalization!…

–– Harsh but true. Do you think people who read in trains, buses and subways want to immerse themselves in complex language?! No! They want to have a little fun before they go to work, or come back home. It’s the state of readership these days. There's no fighting reality. And I’m not even gonna talk about the distraction that is a smartphone… All I’m saying is: if you're not willing to rewrite this story to make life easy for readers, then you should keep it out of the public eye.

I had this difficult conversation with a friend of mine regarding a Dreamer fic I'm writing. I was always in doubt whether it was suitable to be posted or not… But lately, I've been thinking about not posting this one after all… I don't like the idea of having to censor myself, to 'dumb a text down' for the readers. On the other hand, my unpopular opinions might do this fic more harm than good, and I would be exposing myself to ridicule, which is something I don't want.

As it is, I wish there really was a Cemetery of Forgotten Books (or fics), so I could take my fic there for safe-keeping.  Otherwise, this excerpt is all I can show on this virtual desert.
