Charlie Brown approaches Lucy with a smile, while she is jumping rope. He calls her a fussbudget, but she stops her action and calmly explains that she has changed, looking like she has reached an epiphany about herself. Is there a real change from fussbudget to ornery? Or is she simply arguing semantics? How we perceive ourselves vs. how others see us, and how we try to define our own quirks (even when those quirks are less than endearing) are the subjects of this strip. Lucy is such a contrarian that she even refuses the fussbudget label in favor of ornery. In fact, her words to Charlie Brown feel simply like grumpiness with a veneer of depth. Ultimately, even when Charlie Brown agrees with Lucy she will still contradict him, making her character cantankerously recognizable.
